THE BASICS

THE BASICS

Artists Management is a hard and fast-paced job, which requires spending a lot of time close to the artist.

An Artist Manager is in charge of making their clients known to producers and labels, sharing their music with them, planning and scheduling upcoming tours and releases, taking care of marketing and merchandising strategies, negotiating contracts, conducting deals, and generally helping their clients to shape and build their career.

They are responsible for settling any conflicts within their team, standing up for the client when they are being mistreated, and making sure that their artists are in the best mental and physical place they could be in.

THE LIFE OF AN ESTABLISHED ARTIST'S MANAGER

You need to know that if your artist isn’t making music, releasing music, touring, or doing THEIR job, you cannot do yours.

An artist manager has to make sure their client's schedule runs smoothly every day. To do that, they have to oversee and keep track of every factor that might impact their client’s career. Their tasks range from making sure that the recording of an upcoming single or album makes the deadlines, staying in touch with the record label - since they are responsible for many aspects of the artist’s career, - to working with the booking agents on tours and other events (like television appearances). Their main goal every day is to ensure their client’s success, step-by-step, within the industry.

RELATIONSHIP WITH ARTISTS

THE BASICS

A manager is the link between their clients and every other person in the industry. They have to supervise everything that has to do with their client’s careers (the recording of a track or an album, every marketing campaign related to the artist, planning out shows, booking performances, etc.) and make sure that everything flows smoothly.

An Artist Manager is hard to replace.

TIME SPENT

The time of an Artist Manager is divided entirely on what their daily tasks are. That includes calls, working on the company's goals, and liaising with the rest of the team.

Besides that, the division of the time of an Artist Manager depends a lot on their client, whether they are a small, medium, or big artist, if they are open to brand partnerships or any partnerships in general, how much they want to focus on promo, and many more factors.

Since you can get started by trying out any role in the industry, a degree in music, marketing, or business management can be valuable since they are connected with multiple roles within the industry.

HOW TO GET STARTED

One can set their foot in this field by trying out every role in the industry. By doing that they gain experience, learn the basics of the role of an Artist Manager (as in this job it’s important to understand the rest of the roles in the industry), and create connections within the industry.

“If you set a goal to learn exactly what you do NOT want to do, then you’ll fall into what you love doing very quickly.” ~ Andrew Spalter, Founder of East Goes Global

Another way to gain experience is to start managing new artists. That way you can guide them from the beginning while both of you gain experience in the industry.
